Well, don’t. It’s perfectly good sisterly advice.

My 23-year-old sister is studying music production in Nashville, and is spending her summer as some kind of roadie-promoter hybrid, on tour, up and down the east coast, in a cramped van, with a series of different bands I’ve never heard of.

She has been on the road for a week, and finally emailed to let the family know that things are going GREAT! except for the part where she went to the emergency room, which turned out to be FINE! FUN! ROCK STAR!

So I wrote her back:

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST HOW HAVE YOU HAD TO GO TO URGENT CARE ALREADY IN JUST A WEEK ON THE ROAD HOLY SHIT HOW HAVE YOU BEEN TO THAT MANY STATES IN ONE WEEK AND REALLY URGENT CARE SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING

And that’s MY reaction. Think of what Mom and Dad will say!

Please write or call again when you can! BE FUCKING CAREFUL FOR FUCKS SAKE KATHARINE. Hang in there and have fun and be safe! Don’t do any coke if they offer it.

Love, L

I’m a good sister.

The majority of new music in my life comes to me courtesy of my brother, a 25-year-old lawyer and indie music collector. Music is very important to him, and without a regular supply of his mixes, I’d never hear anything good or upcoming or different from what I’d settled on at age 16.

Several years ago, he introduced me, around the same time, to a few songs by Spoon, The Faint, and Ben Kweller. So, of course, I thought of him when the MAHA Festival cemented its lineup.

Last week, I emailed him with the intention of gloating (I am a big sister, after all) about the MAHA Festival. “Guess who I get to see in Omaha this weekend,” “I have a VIP pass,” etcetera.

He wrote back, “Wow. It’s like my sophomore year of college exploded all over your town.”
